Hewland MK8 gear change/fix

Postby TeamFRD » Thu Nov 15, 2007 4:42 pm

I lost 2nd gear during an autox run. There is no tension while the other gear have tension. With the engine on and everything turning, there is clunking noises. :(
This is the only part of my car that I have not got into. I read that gear changes are not difficult and I have the schematic.
So what can I expect to find?
Does the non-pinion gears come out as one piece on layshaft?
Do the pinion gears just slide off the back?

PM to get my number. TIA

Ouch! :shock: :(

Sorry to hear about that, but maybe once you figure it out, you'll be changing gears depending on the venue. ;)

I'm opening up the Hewland right now. If you are bored... call. Jags are on the radio.

edit: Stripped the small gear of the 2nd gear set. 4+ hours taking my time. Taking pics & notes. Dear Santa...

Instead of replacing just the broken part, why not change all of the ratios! Bought a new Webster 2nd from Taylor-race.com Bought used 3rd and 4th from private party.
1st= 42 @ 6000rpm
2nd=54 was 58
3rd=64 was 68
4th=77 was 89
More time in the power band for me!
High speed gears will be for sale soon. (if you know any FF or FC guys)

Cool, have you got it all back together now? Sounds like the new ratios should help you out a fair amount...

Not yet. I need to get some RTV and oil. And some Ben-gay for all of this crawling around on the floor. How's this go back together again?

My saga is almost over. All gears work with the engine running and the car on jack stands. Now to drain the oil and repeat.

MK8 /MK9 gear 22:28 for sale.
